Gopishantha”, better known by her stage name “Manorama”, also called “Aachi”, is a Tamil actress who has appeared in more than 1,500 films, 1,000 stage performances, and several television series.
Manorama was born as Gopishantha to Kasi Kilakudaiyar and Ramamirtham in Mannargudi, Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu. She mentions her indebtedness to her mother for her success.
Many of the mother roles that she has played in films resemble her own mother.Her family had to move to Pallathur near Karaikudi owing to poverty. She started her acting career at 12 and when she started on stage, she was rechristened Manorama by drama director Thiruvengadam and harmonist Thiayagarajan. She continued to act in plays and performed as a playback singer.
She was awarded the Padma Shri in 2002. She won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for the movie Pudhiya Pathai in 1989.She was the recipient of the Kalaimamani award by the government of Tamil Nadu. She holds a Guinness World Record for acting more than 1000 number of films.
Cho Ramaswamy claimed on the Tamil TV show Koffee with Anu that he was the first one to call Manorama the female Sivaji Ganesan: He admired her for her versatility and the ability to surprise with her performances.
Manorama has acted alongside famed actors who later took to politics likeM Karunanidhi, MG Ramachandran and J.Jayalalitha and Andhra’s then CM NT Rama Rao – some of the most powerful people in the country at one time or the other.
Such legendary actress Manorma is no more she breathed last on 10thOctober 2015, deeply regret to announce the death of “Aachi Manaroma”. May her soul rest in peace, Om Shanthi Madam Manaroma . She was 78 and survived by one Son.
