Looking back before few years, Kollywood was stormed with its first ever spoof based film ‘Tamizh Padam’ directed by CS Amudhan that created a sensational breeze. With the title Masala Padam giving more hopes of being its successor, we enter theatres only to experience something different with more emotional contexts than being a hilarious entertainer.
The story opens with a clash between a commercial film producer and a group of amateur online bloggers Something quite relevant to the contemporary situations in the industry The producer poses a challenge on these youngsters to write a commercial script and instantly they get themselves hooked up with the process. They follow three individuals Bobby Simha, Mirchi Shiva and Gaurav from different sectors of the society to get some essence of their lifestyle and tastes. Eventually they end up somewhere in a phase where they had never expected.
As cited above, we are filled with some expectations while walking into the theatres and what we get is really different. The film starts with a docu-drama style of imposing the current topic about online bloggers and moves to a route that was not expected. Situations get more emotional during the second half and the movie reminiscences of some hit flicks like Kathai Thiraikathai Vasanam Iyakkam and Jigarthanda. There are some relief of fun through Mirchi Shiva’s portions, but rest of the portions are somewhat okay. The technical department has nothing much to boast about. But the title song and its visuals are really appreciable.
Mirchi Shiva is back to the pavilion of amusing us with some laughter as in some of his previous movies. Bobby Simha in many places faintly reminds us off Assault Sethu in Jigarthanda and newcomer Gaurav with his minimal portions does what is required from him… Ditto with Lakshmi Devy who tries to score brownie points with what is offered to her. There are many others in the cast who try to make their performances well exhibited.
